“How do I lose weight?”

Since starting Eatreal4life I have received many messages asking questions such as “How do I lose weight?” I have had very similar questions about blood pressure, cholesterol, muscle building, and many other health topics. By no fault of their own, people are asking the wrong question.

It’s not your fault. A health professional probably told you that you need to lose weight, lower your blood pressure, or increase your muscle mass. Of course you’re going to want to know how to do that. The problem I have with these questions is the health professional shouldn’t just be telling you what you have. They should be telling you why you have it, or don’t, and how to make the right changes. If we can pinpoint why something is happening, we can do our best to reverse it.

Weight gain is not a cause, it’s a symptom. It can be anything from a hormone imbalance to a food intolerance. That’s why low calories diets often do more damage than good, because focusing on losing the weight does not treat the problem. This is something I am very passionate about and often I can get slightly worked up about, but I’m sick and tired of people being sick and tired. I’m tired of the symptoms being treated with medications that often have side effects of their own. I believe that many diseases can be treated/prevented with good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

If you come to me wanting to know how you can lose some weight, I’m going to ask you about your diet, sleep habits, stress levels, family history, and anything else that might give me more insight into why you gained the weight in the first place. I will not put you on a calorie-restricting diet. Rather, I will help you make changes to your current diet to ensure you are getting the right amount of what you need. I will give you advice on making lifestyle changes to improve your health. The end goal is a sustainable healthy lifestyle. The great thing about a sustainable healthy lifestyle is a sustainable healthy body comes with it! A lean body is a side effect of good health. There is no one size fits all. If someone try’s to tell you there is, they don’t have your best interest at heart.
